CARLSBAD – Dempsey Construction is on the move geographically and internally.
The 14-year-old company has opened a branch office in Calexico and started an automotive division, Accelerated Automotive.
The company also has offices in Spokane and Phoenix with a temporary office in Las Vegas.
Dempsey Construction Vice President Nick Alford said that opening an office in Calexico is part of “a long-term growth strategy for us.”
“It’s really on the heels of a large project that we’re working on out there for IRE Development,” Alford said.
The project is the construction of the 40-acre Calexico Gateway Center South industrial park near the Calexico Port of Entry with four buildings totaling 355,000 square feet to be followed with construction of the 60-acre Calexico Gateway Center North with seven buildings.
“A big part of the success is working with local trade partners in Imperial Valley and working with them strategically to build this project successfully, which is then driving economic growth within that region, so we’re not just coming in, bringing people from other areas. We’re trying to help the community, help the economy,” Alford said.
Alford said that the Calexico office would handle projects throughout Imperial Valley.
As companies shift their manufacturing operations closer to home in Mexico, “There’s a lot of opportunity out there in a lot of different sectors,” Alford said.
Initially, the Calexico office will have a staff of six, but expects to staff up quickly in Calexico and grow company-wide, according to Bryce Raleigh, president and principal of Dempsey Construction.
“I would think that 2024 is going to be a big push for us towards the fourth quarter, and as we enter 2025,” Raleigh said.
Auto Division Built on Project Experience
Before becoming its own division within Dempsey Construction, the Accelerated Automotive team has worked on projects for such brands as Audi, Porsche, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Toyota and KTM, totaling more than 1.5 million square feet, according to Raleigh.
“Automotive is one of the main sectors of business that we’ve built, literally, since 2010.
However, we’re trying to highlight the automotive services by creating a branded service around the automotive industry,” Raleigh said. “We’re trying to create a real crisp, clean, branded service around it.”
Raleigh said that Dempsey has about a dozen active automotive projects and a backlog over next few years worth nearly $185 million.
Clients include the Fletcher Jones Automotive Group based
in Las Vegas.
“We build ground-up, full service dealerships in addition to renovating and expanding existing automotive facilities,” Raleigh said.
