Spink purchases Greenville Technical College’s Buck Mickel Center

The Spinx Co. has purchased Greenville Technical College’s Buck Mickel Center on South Pleasantburg Drive.

“Campus Hq Qozb LLC” bought the 4.76-acre property for $5.25 million in August, according to the Greenville County Register of Deeds. A Spinx representative confirmed the LLC was formed by the company.

The property is located at 216 S. Pleasantburg Drive, across from McAlister Square. It currently holds a multistory office building and a 248-space parking lot.

Formal plans have not been made for the purchased property, according to a spokesperson for The Spinx Co. The Greenville-based company operates gas stations, convenience stores and car washes. It currently has more than 80 locations in South Carolina and North Carolina.

Greenville Technical College’s former Buck Mickel Center housed the college’s Continuing Education Division. The property was donated to Greenville Technical College by T. Walter Braisher in 1993. According to the college, the site was placed on the market as a result of a feasibility study.

“Spinx is a long-time partner of the college, providing equipment that enhances education and funding scholarships that allow students to enroll and graduate. When our partners win, we win,” according to a statement from Greenville Technical College.

The main Greenville Tech campus is less than a mile south on South Pleasantburg Drive. The college also has space in McAlister Square, a former mall primarily occupied by Upstate colleges and Greenville County’s elections offices.

The Spinx Co. corporate offices are currently at 1414 E. Washington St., about one mile northwest of the newly purchased property. The East Washington Street/Laurens Road intersection is a busy gateway to downtown that provides access to Cleveland Park, Greenville Zoo and the Green Line of the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail.

The corporate office is across the street from a Spinx gas station, which was built on the site of the company’s first store. According to Greenville County records, Spinx company subsidiaries own several other adjacent properties at the intersection.

The company was founded by Stewart Spinks in 1972, and he still serves as the company’s founder and chairman. His son, Steve Spinks, has been CEO since 2012. In August 2023, a portion of East Washington Street was given the honorary name “Stewart Spinks Road” by the city of Greenville.
