OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – The General Services Administration, in conjunction with DOGE, is planning to cancel leases for seven federal offices in Nebraska and Iowa this year, according to an exclusive report from The Associated Press.
Four federal offices in Nebraska — two of them in Omaha, one in Lincoln, and one in Valentine — and three in Iowa, including one in Sioux City, are among the hundreds of federal office and building leases across the country that the GAO won’t be renewing this year.
The AP report published on Friday, which includes a list of nearly 800 leases assembled by the GAO with the help of the Department of Government Efficiency, headed by Elon Musk, indicated that the list dated March 10 did not mean the locations would close, but that they would have to either move and possibly downsize, or negotiate their own new leases.
“Agencies are still figuring out what to do,” the AP report states.
Some on the national list will have to figure that out by June 30. Offices listed in Nebraska and Iowa have leases coming up in August and September, and one in December.
DOGE says the selected leases, which in some cases weren’t slated to end until sometime in the 2030s, were targeted mostly because they could be terminated within months without penalty. DOGE says the lease terminations will save roughly $500 million, but AP says that number has not yet been verified — and doesn’t include costs associated with moves or closures.
