Sheriff’s office investigating string of small business burglaries near Owens Cross Roads

OWENS CROSS ROADS, Ala. (WHNT) — The Madison County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) is investigating a string of small business burglaries in the Owens Cross Roads area.

News 19 confirmed that these three shops along U.S. Highway 431 South have all been targeted in the last month: Rocket City Toys, Wagon Wheel Liquors Inc. and El Omeca Mexican Restaurant.

The person or people involved in the burglaries are hitting the businesses overnight and seem to be going for cash.

Surveillance footage from Rocket City Toys around 1:15 a.m. on Sunday shows a suspect grabbing the cash drawer and you can hear the store’s alarms going off.

The owner of the toy store said he got a call in the middle of the night from MCSO telling him someone broke in. When he arrived, he learned the suspect came in through the back door and took the cash register.

The store is open for business but is unable to take cash payments until the new cash register arrives.

Down the street, Wagon Wheel Liquors Inc. was broken into earlier in May. The suspect in their surveillance video from early on Saturday, May 11, goes for the cash register and pulls coins out. Then, he appears to take several other products from behind the counter.

The owner of Wagon Wheel says he is offering a $1,000 reward to anyone who can identify the suspect in the video by name.

El Omeca was targeted by someone on May 8, also in the early morning hours. Similar to the other cases, this person broke in through the back and took money from the register.

The sheriff’s office sent the following statement regarding the burglaries to News 19:

Unfortunately, over the past weekend, our deputies responded to several business burglaries in the area. We’ve generated reports and assigned them to our detectives, who are actively following up on leads. I’m afraid there’s nothing more I can provide you with at this time.

I know this is frustrating for the community, but I assure you that we’re doing everything we can to solve these crimes and bring the perpetrators to justice. Please keep us updated if you have any information that could help our investigation.
